Why this matters

Skin of color is too often an afterthought

Studies of dermatology textbooks have found that only a small share of their images show darker skin. Conditions like CCCA look different, progress differently and respond differently, and many people go years before someone recognizes them.

So we don't ask you to trust a badge. Every practice here shows, in its own words, that it treats Black skin and hair, and we link to where it says so.

How we verify

Three checks on every profile

  1. Their own words. We read the practice's website for documented care for Black skin and hair, and quote it.
  2. The license record. We match the providers at that address in the federal NPI registry, with license numbers.
  3. No guessing. "Black-owned" or "Black dermatologist" appears only when the practice says it or confirms it.

Questions people ask

How do you decide which dermatologists to list?

We read each practice's own website and list it when the site documents care for Black skin and hair: skin of color, CCCA, traction alopecia, textured hair, keloids and more. Every profile shows the exact page and words, and the licensed providers we matched in the federal NPI registry. How we verify

Are all of these dermatologists Black?

Not necessarily, and we never guess anyone's race. A profile says "Black-owned" or "Black dermatologist" only when the practice says so itself or confirms it to us. Every listed practice documents experience with Black skin and hair.

Can dermatologists pay to be listed or ranked higher?

No. Listing is free and the order is set by what the practice documents, not by payment. How we make money
